Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week

 

Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week takes place the week before Thanksgiving. It is an annual event held across the United States to educate the public, raise awareness, and create support for anti-poverty programs through events, advocacy, and fundraising.

National and State Statistics

In the United States

  • 37.2 million Americans live below the poverty level
  • 580,000 Americans are homeless on a typical night
  • 44 million Americans are at risk of suffering from hunger
  • 1 in 6 children in the U.S. live in poverty

 

 In the State of California

  •  161,445 homeless individuals 
  • 74% of the total homeless population is unsheltered
  • 22% of households experience food insecurity or hunger
  • 27% of households experiencing food insecurity have children
  • 47.2% of low-income California adults reported being unable to afford enough food in 2024
