Afrobeat and Its Influences

In celebration of Black History Month, the Walter W. Stiern Library has put together an exhibit on Afrobeat music and its influences here in the United States and abroad. Each artist is featured with a brief biography along with samples of their music.

Black History Month and Afrobeat Music

In support of Black History Month and the Black Faculty & Staff Association (BFSA), the Walter W. Stiern Library publishes an annual digital exhibit. This year's exhibit focuses on Afrobeat, an urban popular music genre that traces its origins to Nigeria in the late 1960s. This style of music emphasizes percussion rhythms and features elements of jazz and funk. Its lyrics are often strongly political. Afrobeat music has influenced various contemporary artists or groups such as David Byrne, Paul Simon, and Gorillaz.
