Black History Month: Black History & Education

Senior Black faculty make a valuable contribution to the professorate by serving intentionally and vicariously as mentors to junior Black faculty and doctoral students. The authors of this research discuss the outcomes of a project consisting of two panel seminars that were provided to junior Black faculty and doctoral students at a Research I urban university. Topics covered included department politics, the publication process, developing a research agenda, submission of the tenure "package, " and the review process. This article concludes with implications for Black doctoral student retention and increasing the number of Black faculty in higher education who attain promotion and tenure. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper examines the challenges that African Americans face teaching predominantly white classes at the tertiary level, and argues that these challenges can be resolved by establishing strong ties between students and teachers. While it is largely black faculty who incur the costs of this relationship building, the paper notes that they probably are not the only beneficiaries. White students are likely to benefit as well, as is society at large. The paper’s analysis suggests that black faculty face work that is outside the scope of what white faculty must do. Such work can be viewed as another dimension of the burden of delivering a “hidden curriculum” for their predominately white institutions of employment (Brayboy, Journal of Black Studies 34: 72–86, 2003). What is Afrocentric education (ACE)? What are the implications of ACE for school leaders and teachers? What is the relationship of ACE to multicultural education (MCE) and how does ACE differ from MCE? What are the standards that govern ACE's philosophical foundation and practical application? This article provides a practical definition of ACE that can be understood by the community and the academy, the theoretical basis of ACE, its relationship to MCE, a synthesis of the research literature, and a framework of basic standards that educational leaders, teachers, and professors can employ for curriculum development, strategic planning, instructional leadership, instructional strategies, and transformation of school culture in PK-12 and higher education.
