Library of Congress Classification

The Walter W. Stiern Library's book collections are organized using the Library of Congress Classification system. This means that for every subject there is an assigned letter code (or classification.) For Fine Arts the codes are in the Ns. However, photography and cinema are unique in that they are assigned to the classification of Technology, therefore their codes fall into the TR ranges. For example, if you wanted to browse our section of books all about sculpture, you would go to the 4th floor and look for the NB ranges. See the table below to find the appropriate art range that you are looking for.

Subclass N Visual Arts
Subclass NA Architecture
Subclass NB Sculpture
Subclass NC  Drawing, design, illustration
Subclass ND Painting
Subclass NE Print media
Subclass NK  Decorative arts
Subclass NX Arts in general
Subclass TR Photography, cinematography, motion pictures
